Geometrically polarized architected dielectrics with apparent piezoelectricity

Through the suitable geometry of a repeating unit, metamaterial can exhibit property not present in base material. Here, we propose class low area-fraction, bending-dominated metamaterials that apparent piezoelectricity, even though material is piezoelectric. The proposed exploit universal electromechanical coupling operative at sub-micron scales, flexoelectricity, and upscale it to macro-scale through geometrically-polarized architecture. We quantify piezoresponse thanks accurate simulations continuum flexoelectricity. characterize how piezoelectricity depends on lattice geometry, orientation, feature size area fraction. find if good flexoelectric, then our area-fraction designs piezoelectric couplings comparable best ceramics bulk. More generally, work provides rules endow any dielectric with hence enabling non-toxic, environmentally friendly biocompatible materials for transduction.
